Summer job: Plastic Pollution Program Assistant
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Georgian Bay Forever
Location: Home base will be located in Collingwood with some travel around Georgian Bay including as far north as Pointe au Baril on the eastern side and Tobermory on the western side. Georgian Bay Forever (GBF) is a Canadian charity focused on aquatic ecosystem research, education and protection.

Plastic pollution is a major environmental concern in Georgian Bay and the entire Great Lakes Basin. More than 10,000 tonnes of plastic end up in our water and tributaries every year. Beyond visible litter, microplastics are less than 5mm in size, and are present in extremely high concentrations throughout Georgian Bay and the Great Lakes system. Georgian Bay Forever’s Divert and Capture and Diversion 2.0 projects, are working to fight macro and microplastic pollution in Georgian Bay through community engagement, shoreline cleanups, waste characterizations and public education programs.

Position Description: Under the supervision of GBF Project Managers, the Plastic Pollution Program Assistants will contribute to the planning, organization and delivery of GBF’s Divert and Capture and Diversion 2.0 Project objectives, goals and activities.

Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Build and sustain relationship with community groups who will assist in delivering key activities;
  • Organize and participate in weekly shoreline cleanups and oversee onsite volunteers;
  • Manage, educate and oversee volunteers for characterizations of waste being diverted through Seabins, Gutter Bins and Trash Traps;
  • Assist in developing and delivering, for both online and in-person activities, education programs and workshops to local school and youth groups, community partner organizations, and attending local events;
  • Communicate effectively with the public about GBF’s projects, missions, and values;
  • Communicate with and recruit local businesses and schools to join GBF’s Plastic-Free Georgian Bay campaign;
  • Assist with research components, database management, analysis, report writing and training in data collection protocols as needed, specifically related to waste characterizations and deep dive protocols of plastic pollution being captured within the diversion technologies
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies Required:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen between the ages of 15 and 30;
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and competently represent GBF in the online and physical community;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and co-ordinate the community to take action and communicate safety protocols;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills;
  • Excellent at motivating and overseeing volunteers of all ages in activities;
  • Strong computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Drive;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team;
  • Motivated, independent, and detail-oriented with the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends;
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate various terrain;
  • Have access to a smartphone, laptop/computer and wi-fi to use Zoom, camera, photo archives, emails, Microsoft Office and Google Drive;
  • Keep excellent records and documentation on all activities and participants; and provide reporting on activities, waste characterizations and volunteer logs;
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle daily;
  • Be enrolled in or completed a university degree, college diploma or a combination of relevant experience in environmental science/studies.

Hourly Wage: $18 per hour.

Contract dates: Entry-level full-time contract position (15 weeks) from May 21st – August 30th, 2024.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. This position will require some weekend and evening work.
